Probation Welcome and Overview

Thank You for your interest in the Probation Department. We hope you find the information contained in this site to be helpful and informative. When you leave the site, our hope is that you have a better understanding of whom we are and the role we fulfill in the court system.

While public attention often focuses on jail and prisons, you will find it interesting to learn the majority of youth/offenders under the jurisdiction of the Somerset County Courts are being managed safely within the community through the services provided by the Probation Department.

The Department has specially trained probation officers, who perform the supervision activities of youth, probationers, parolees, and incarcerated offenders. Individual officers specialize in the monitoring of certain types of offenses or specialize in specific case management functions. Specialization has allowed the officers to become knowledgeable and efficient in performing their assigned duties. The department also employs Probation Aides who serve a valuable role within the court system and the community in the form of victim services, community service, and collections. Professional Support Staff, proficient in computer skills and the maintenance of valuable data and documents complete the department. The Staff of the Somerset County Probation and Parole Department has made a commitment to:

- Provide quality services to the Courts, victims of crime and the communities within Somerset County through effective supervision of youth/offenders while maintaining respect for the dignity of all individuals and a firm belief in the capacity for change.
- Treat all victims of crime with dignity and respect, and afford them, consistent with the law, the ability to choose their level of participation.
- Hold youth/offenders accountable by implementing credible supervision strategies that provide balanced attention to the Protection of the Citizens of Somerset County, imposition of accountability for offenses committed and the development of competencies to enable youth/offenders to become law abiding citizens.
- Strengthen their own professional capacity to lead, serve and support each other and the communities in which they live through professional training and development.
