Sheriff's Office - Other Duties

Ever since the Sheriff’s Office relocated to the main entrance of the Somerset County Courthouse, the Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in public awareness about the involvement of this office in the day-to-day safety and protection of Somerset County.

People visit the Sheriff’s Office daily for many purposes including obtaining pistol permits, filing Protection From Abuse orders, obtaining information on Sheriff’s sales.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office continues to be active in community affairs such as providing Eddie the Eagle Gun Safety Programs in all 12 of the county school districts. The Sheriff’s Office actively participates in the Somerset County Fair each year. McGruff the Crime Dog participates in many county activities throughout the year relaying safety education to the children in the county.

The Sheriff's Office has over a number of years offered a citizens handgun safety and familiarization course to county residents. The course is offered twice annually and has trained hundreds of Somerset Countians in the safe handling of handguns and basic marksmanship.

The Sheriff’s Office is also involved with TRIAD. This program helps eliminate victimization of Senior Citizens, and is sponsored by the National Sheriffs’ Association, International Chiefs of Police, and the National A.A.R.P.

Somerset County Sheriff Brad Cramer also serves as the head of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. The Sheriff’s Mounted Posse is a volunteer service consisting of 15 volunteers owning their own horses and are organized to help serve the community in any way possible, as long as it can be on horseback. Searching for lost hunters and lost children, and parading throughout Somerset County, as well as helping with the Somerset County Fair are just a few of the activities this volunteer organization participates in throughout the year. This unit is self-supporting and creates no cost to the county of Somerset. The Somerset County Sheriff’s Posse was formed in 1983, and this service continues to be under the direction of Sheriff Brad Cramer.
