Every four years Somerset County voters elect three citizens to serve on the Board of County Auditors. The Auditors serve as an independent source of verification for the taxpayers that all monies due the county are accounted for and transactions are properly recorded.
Jerry L. Lyons, Annette Isgan, and John F. Steele are currently serving as the Somerset County Auditors.
The County Code requires the Auditors to audit, settle, and adjust the accounts of all county officers. They also have the authority to establish a system of accounts, conduct hearings, and issue subpoenas when necessary to perform their duties.
The Auditors conduct monthly reviews of the financial transactions of the county row offices, Magisterial District Judge offices, and other county departments and programs. Other reviews of Tax Collectors and various county funds and accounts are done periodically throughout the year.
An audit of county funds is done for the prior year and a detailed report is filed with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. An Annual Report and Financial Statement is published by the Auditors in booklet form and distributed to the Court of Common Pleas, the County Commissioners and Department Heads. It is also published in county newspapers for public review.
