SOMERSET, PA – With the holiday season upon us the Somerset County Commissioners and the Somerset County Recycling Program would like to remind you of the many ways you can celebrate a GREEN Christmas. The following is a list of items you should recycle and the convenient locations throughout the County where you can drop them off.

Cardboard packaging, wrapping paper, catalogs and Christmas cards can all be grouped together and dropped off at J.M.S. Recycling, 220 Cannery Road, Somerset, PA, and (814) 443-3070. Also, occasionally nursing homes and church groups collect Christmas cards for use in craft projects.

After your holiday party be sure to take your empty aluminum cans, clear and brown glass bottles, and plastic containers to J.M.S. Recycling or to collection facilities located at the Somerset Wal-Mart, the Salisbury Borough Building, the Berlin Borough Maintenance Building, the drop off bins at the Windber Municipal Building, and the Blue Bins at the Windber Community Center (Plastics 1& 2 only), Hooversville Fireman’s Grove (Plastics 1& 2 only), and the Jenner Township Municipal Building (Plastics 1& 2 only). Brown paper grocery bags make excellent receptacles for sorting each of these items before they are taken to the recycling bins.

Packing peanuts can be taken to the UPS Distribution Center located at 150 Donald Lane, Johnstown, PA, or call the UPS Store, 1513 Scalp Avenue, Johnstown, PA, 814-266-8877, for details.

Electronic equipment, (TV’s, Computers, CRT’s etc), can be recycled, for a nominal fee, at J.V.S. Environmental, Rockwood, PA. Contact them at (814) 442-4481 or jvsenvironmental@yahoo.com for details.

As the fury of the holidays come to an end, you can put your live Christmas tree to good use by contacting local sportsman clubs to see if they can be used for game, bird, or fish habitat. Another suggestion is to contact your local municipality as they may chip them for use as mulch.

Remember, PREcycling is just as important as recycling. Put rechargeable batteries in all toys and electronics, and use gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

For more information on how you can do your part this Christmas season and throughout the entire year, please visit the County web site at www.co.somerset.pa.us and follow the recycling link, or contact John Peters, County Recycling Coordinator at 445-1571 or by email at recycling@co.somerset.pa.us.
